Mayoral candidate Patricia Mason says that the continuing controversy over Council’s public land sales shows it is time for a new approach to any development proposals on public land. “The Local Government Act says that Council must effectively manage the assets for which it is responsible,” says Mrs Mason who is standing for election as Mayor and ward one Councillor with the support of the Shoalhaven Action Campaign.
“No-one can believe that selling public land in secret deals at discounted prices can be considered effective management. That’s not to say that ideas for development should be turned away but Council needs a new attitude to these proposals,” Mrs Mason said. “One of the principles under which candidates will be standing for election with the support of the Shoalhaven Action Campaign is directly related to the sale of public assets. Details of any proposals for the sale of public assets, including air space, will be widely and freely available in sufficient time for considered public participation before decisions are made about sale and development.”
“This is nothing more than treating the citizens of the Shoalhaven with respect and allowing them to understand and be part of decision making. It won’t cost any more, it won’t slow developments down. In fact by providing a level playing field it will support economic development and job creation. To put it simply it’s just a change of attitude which will help rebuild community confidence in Council.” Mrs Mason said.
